Slips, Trips, and Falls
Slips, trips, and falls (STFs) are a significant safety concern in agriculture, leading to a high number of injuries and lost workdays. These incidents are particularly common due to the varied and often hazardous environments found on farms. To mitigate the risks, farmers should focus on risk assessment, maintaining clear walkways, using proper footwear, and ensuring equipment is well-maintained.
Key Hazards and Risks:
Uneven Surfaces:
Agricultural work often takes place on sloped terrain, in feedlots, and around areas that are washed down regularly, increasing the risk of slips and falls.
Wet and Slippery Conditions:
Irrigation, washing down equipment, and winter weather can create icy or wet surfaces, leading to slips.
Tripping Hazards:
Debris, tools, hoses, and even twine left on the ground can cause trips and falls.
Falls from Height:
Climbing ladders, working on hay mows, and accessing equipment platforms can result in falls from elevation, sometimes with severe consequences.
Equipment-Related Falls:
Climbing in and out of tractors and other machinery, or using equipment on uneven ground, can lead to falls.
